A few specific fixes for bathoptician.co.uk

I rebuild small-business sites in my spare time when I can see they are leaving credibility on the table. I spent ten minutes on the live bathoptician.co.uk on a phone and three things stood out, all on the first scroll. Three findings below, then a working rebuild you can click through at /preview/.

Three findings

What ten minutes on the live site, on a phone, surfaced.

A walk-through of bathoptician.co.uk as it stands on 18 May 2026.

01

The footer copyright still reads 2021 and the founder quote on /about-us hasn’t been edited since the practice was thirty-nine years old.

What I saw
Every page of bathoptician.co.uk carries "© 2021 Bath Opticians" in the footer. On /about-us, Brian Vousden’s opening line reads "I established my first practice almost 40 years ago in 1976." Working backwards, "almost forty years from 1976" puts the copy at roughly 2015 or 2016. The site has not been meaningfully touched in a decade. For a patient arriving cold in 2026 the cue is unmistakable: the practice may be active but its website was left to fend for itself nine years ago. The WordPress build (Elementor, post-7.css ver=1648636796, March 2022) does not auto-compute the footer year from build date.
After rebuild
The rebuild computes the year live from the build date and ships "1976 to 2026" in the footer, refreshed every January without anyone touching the site. The "fifty years on Moorland Road" line repeats in the header eyebrow, the hero strap and the JSON-LD foundingDate, so any patient or search engine reading the page can place the practice on a fifty-year arc within five seconds. Brian’s quote is rewritten in his voice, dated this year.

When Armstrong & North closed you took on their patient records, and the homepage doesn’t mention it.

What I saw
Armstrong & North Opticians at 13 Chelsea Road, Lower Weston, Bath BA1 3DU closed and their patient eye-health records were transferred to Bath Opticians for continued care. The current /about-us page mentions this in passing, halfway down. The homepage does not mention it at all. For a former Armstrong & North patient googling "where did my optician go" in 2026 there is nothing on the landing page that signals "your records are here, you are welcome." That is the single highest-trust signal Bath Opticians has and it sits four clicks from the homepage.
After rebuild
The rebuild puts the Armstrong & North continuity story in a named trust strip immediately under the hero and at the top of the heritage band, with a one-line invitation to book a follow-up. Schema markup carries the practice as the receiving practice so Google can also surface the relationship in search.

03

The homepage opens with stock imagery while the genuine interior shot of the green-backlit frame walls sits two clicks deep.

What I saw
On the live site, the first hero photo on /index is the boy-having-eye-test trial-frame portrait, then a 2013 retinoscope shot of a male optometrist (Neil Watson photography session, EXIF-confirmed) sits further down. The single most distinctive Bath Opticians image, the 1350-pixel panoramic of the green-illuminated frame wall display, lives inside /contact-lenses and never appears on the homepage. So does the OCT scanner. So do the four practising optometrists named on the team page (Lara Denman, Mathew Bolton, Camille Kelly, Cherilyn Williams). A first-time visitor sees stock medical photography instead of the practice they are about to walk into.
After rebuild
The rebuild leads with the green frame-wall panorama as the hero left-column photo, names the optometrists in the heritage band, and reserves the clinical close-ups for the services grid where they belong. The OCT and Ortho-K specialism block is given a section of its own with the DCLP credential called out by name.
